Manchester, The gritty cultural capital of the North has seen fashions come and go throughout the years, but none have caused a stir like the punk movement of the late 1970’s. Carrying on the controversial legacy of rock & roll, Punk was born from a disgruntled youth living in an unsettled Britain. Punk shook the foundation of society and made people realise that the youth had a voice.

‘36 Years’ consists of two collaged sculptures in response to the Brass tacks Punk documentary filmed in Manchester. The documentary highlights issues and rifts between social groups and government. It focuses not only on the ‘negative effect‘ of punk culture on young people but also societies reaction to the new movement. The two statements within the work reflect both a quote from the documentary and personal experience of abuse.

Emulating the home made aesthetic of the Punk movement, these collages explore political and social unrest. They are made from old political posters that have been collected over several years, found materials and paint.

My creative practice is interdisciplinary with strong recurring themes that have links with my culture and lifestyle. The monochromatic nature of my work is a mainstay that allows me to explore shape, texture and shadow in depth.
