‘Thatchers’ Children’

After watching documentary ‘The Summer Of Rave’ I decided to work with a combination of film and drawing. We were asked to respond to the documentaries in any way we wished. Obviously the themes of music and drug taking were prevalent throughout each documentary and so I wanted to take a different angle and look at what started the hype.

‘They were Thatchers’ children and she had only herself to blame.’

Above is the quote to which I responded. My film consists of found footage showing relevant events throughout part of Thatchers’ time in parliament, combined with kaleidoscopic patterns, scenes of dancing, drug taking and raves all accompanied by a classic acid house track. This is meant to represent how when the poor got poorer, the kids of the 80’s/90’s were drawn to such raves and attracted by hallucinogenic drug use and upper as a way of feeling a part of something if not society.

The short film is projected onto a continuous line drawing of my representation of ‘Thatchers’ Child’ – Modern day Manchester – Reality, when the music, the lights and the LSD fade.

Contemporary Artist Ash Barrow is now based in South Yorkshire and is working throughout the UK with pieces that range from paintings and drawings to taxidermy, film and photography. She draws inspiration from underground film, heavy metal music, occultism and subcultures - with her works often consisting of a macabre or autobiographical nature. Touching on and bringing to light the issues of gender and sexualityThrough studying Contemporary Arts Practices at degree level, and being awarded a First Class Honours, Ash was able to develop her own unique style and way of working and through participating in multiple exhibitions has gained an understanding of the creative community andwhat is required of an Artist in order to grow and progress within the Arts industry.Throughout the years Ash has used many different mediums to match the mood of the theme of her work. She’s experimented with things from large-scale painting and portraiture to small intricate paper cutes but the major focus in Ash’s practice is the ever-growing series of continuous line drawings & Paintings. These are often autobiographical and used as a way of communication. Releasing stress and anger about day-to-day situations and illustrating things she can’t or shouldn’t put into words. She first used this technique whilst in college and as she continued to generate more and more she developed a, somewhat, defined style and technique of producing these. The characteristics of the images are an intentional mix of endearing and creepy, using bright colours and a childlike hand drawn quality often depicting sinister or crude images.
